Previously quality could be viewed as ‘someone else’s problem’ and the task possibly delegated to the most junior member of the organisation. The new standard requires that ‘top management demonstrate leadership and commitment with respect to the quality management system.
Currently this is unclear exactly how this will be achieved but it is likely to involve the external auditor interviewing top management to determine what they understand quality to mean to their organisation.
There are many guidelines available but ISO9001:2015 standard refers to the 7 quality management principles which are:
1. Customer Focus
The primary focus of the quality management system is to meet customer requirements and to strive to exceed customer expectations.
2. Leadership
Establish a unity of purpose and direction and create conditions in which people are engaged in achieving the quality objectives of the organisation.
3. Engagement of People
Recognise that it is essential for the organization that all people are competent, empowered and engaged in delivering value to their customers.
4. Process Approach
Consistent and predictable results are achieved more effectively and efficiently when activities are understood and managed as interrelated processes that function as a coherent system.
5. Improvement
The organisation is committed to continually improve their processes and products.
6. Evidence-based Decision Making
Decisions are based on the analysis and evaluation of data and information are more likely to produce desired results.
7. Relationship Management
The organisation manages their relationships with interested parties.
Anyone involved with ISO9001:2015 must now be aware of the bigger picture that compliance to the standard now requires.
