The aim is to harmonise the safety performance of construction products across Europe and the directive will apply to anything placed on the market, whether imported or manufactured in the EU.
For fabricators of structural steel and aluminium this means the CE marking of your products to BS EN 1090 is now a legal requirement and will also apply to any fabricated products either manufactured or imported from outside the European Union.
Under the regulations a legal obligation is placed on ‘manufacturers’, ‘importers’ and ‘distributors’ of fabricated steel and aluminium construction products to CE Mark their goods.
Penalties for failing to comply ISO 1090 Structural Steel include:
• Prohibition notices and notices to warn
• Suspension notices
• Fines, and
• Imprisonment.
The scope of this standard is very wide ranging and covers structural steel and aluminium components and steel components for use in composite steel and concrete structures.
ISO 1090 Structural Steel also applies to structural cold-formed members and sheeting. The standard does not cover:
- Suspended ceilings;
- Rails or sleepers for use in railway systems.
All fabricated steel and aluminium is seen as safety critical and ISO 1090 requires that the contractor’s factory production control system to be assessed and certified by a UKAS Accredited notified body.
Many organisations will already have the elements in place to conform to the requirements and those companies registered to BS EN ISO 9001 will be in a good starting position.
