BS OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health & Safety Standard is disappearing and ISO 45001 taking its place!
For years the recognised occupational Health & Safety standard to aim for and achieve was BS OHSAS 18001 but that’s all changing in October 2016 with the introduction of the long awaited International Standard ISO 45001. Once that standard is issued UKAS will stop accrediting companies to BS OHSAS 18001, and start accrediting to ISO 45001.
Companies that hold the accreditation BS OHSAS 18001 will have to convert to ISO 45001 by their next recertification. Companies that are thinking of achieving BS OHSAS 18001 have a decision to make, whether to obtain OHSAS18001 or wait until October and into next year when the new standard is issued and accreditation companies audit against that standard.
A question companies need to ask themselves:
Why do they want a OH&S standard, is it need or want?
If it is due to pressure from customers/potential customers then I would go for BS OHSAS 18001 now and convert over to ISO 45001 later. If it is just an internal want then I would wait until next year and go for the ISO 45001 standard, but start to put working procedures in place now.
Warning: There will be some differences to the requirements of the two standards; it will not be a simple change of certificate.
