How many of you think and do just that after all nothing is going to go wrong! You only used the equipment yesterday.
That’s just what somebody thought. He worked on a press in an engineering company no checks were carried out on the safety interlock stops before work started for the day. The machine was only serviced the week before by the manufacturer ‘Nothing was going to go wrong’. That was until the machine needed to be reset for the next job. The setter set the machine and went to the control panel to operate the machine and do the first test piece. The operator decided to adjust the position of the test piece just as the setter pressed the button to operate the machine. The safety guard came down trapping the operators arm; at this point the safety cut out stop should have worked as the interlocking mechanism could not engage as the operators arm was keeping the two halves of the safety gate apart. BUT the interlocking safety system did not work; the press plate came down and crushed the operators hand so severely it crushed the hand off. Due to the severity of the damage to the hand it could not be re-attached. At 29 years old, a man with a young family had received a life changing injury that will affect him for the rest of his life, not to mention the pain he suffered and the pain he will suffer in the future.
Safety checks are put into place for a reason, normally as a result of adverse experiences within the industry. They are not there to waste your time but to save somebody from life changing injuries or death. If it is your responsibility to carryout daily / weekly checks do them properly, don’t look on them as a chore but your opportunity to stop an accident happening.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
