OHSAS 18001 Occupational health and safety (OHS) or workplace health and safety (WHS)
Occupational health and safety (OHS) or workplace health and safety (WHS) is all about the safety, health and welfare of company’s employees or persons who may be affected by the acts or omissions of the company or its workforce.
Various Health & Safety Acts and Regulations have been put on the statute books that give a number of legal requirements to be met by companies and employers.
BS OHSAS 18001 is the recognised British accreditation standard for Occupational health and safety.
To gain accreditation to that standard, companies must be able to demonstrate compliance to the requirements of the standard. In short, ARE YOU LEGAL? PROVE IT!
The OHSAS 18001 specification was updated in July 2007 making it more closely aligned with the structures of ISO 9000 and ISO 14000. This enabled companies to easily adopt OHSAS 18001 alongside existing management systems, giving a truly Integrated Management System.
As of December 2013 the International Organization for Standardization has approved the project to develop the ISO 45001 standard, an ISO analogue to the OHSAS 18000 standards.
