When a company does not want to do something they often blame “Health & Safety” for the reason not to do it.
Some examples given by the HSE Myth Busters, none of which should be blamed on “HEALTH & SAFETY”
1/ Supermarket cafe refused to sell customer a packet of fruit bread for “HEALTH & SAFETY” reasons as he didn’t want it toasted before taking it home.
2/ A Council run library will not let users plug their laptops into electrical outlets because of “HEALTH & SAFETY”.
3/ Workers are banned from putting up Christmas decorations in the office for “HEALTH & SAFETY” reasons
4/ Kids must wear goggles to play conkers for “HEALTH & SAFETY” reasons
There are justifiable situations where HEALTH & SAFETY can be use for the reason not to do something, but before using that as the reason be sure that it is.
Use common sense
HEALTH & SAFETY is not the enemy. The reason for the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 is to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work” of all employees.
Over the years workers have been safer at work. The number of fatalities has fallen along with the number of serious injuries, BUT, one is too many.
Carry out risk assessments and cosh assessments, ensure everyone has a safe place of work and the work they do is done in a safe way.
Nobody wants to be injured at work, and no employer wants their employees hurt.
REMEMBER: All accidents can be avoided if proper procedures are followed.
