In this briefing, we focus on ways in which organisations can reduce the impact of their activities on the environment from the shop floor.
From our experience of supporting a wide range of organisations in gaining ISO14001 accreditation, we have found that making some simple adjustments to how your shop floor operates can bring about significant rewards – not only to your environmental credentials, but also your bottom line:
Motors and engines
- Keep motors regularly maintained to reduce energy costs
- Install higher efficiency motors to reduce energy consumption
- Turn off motors when not in use to save energy, bring down the temperature on the shop floor and save money
Compressed air
- Identify and fix any leaks
- Use lower operating pressure where possible
- Ensure there is a good supply of cool air around the compressor
- Make sure the compressor is regularly serviced and has a written scheme of examination
Refrigeration
- Keep freezer doors closed
- Ensure your refrigerator is set at the right temperature
- Don’t let the condensers get overheated
- Don’t put too much refrigerant charge in
